What makes a retreat
here different

Most corporate off-sites happen in hotel conference rooms — a projector, a facilitator, a team dinner and back to the same patterns on Monday. We do not do that.

At Girotondo Horizons, the mountain landscape is not a backdrop — it is part of the methodology. We use the altitude, the physical making, the removal from normal context and the proximity to nature as active elements in the facilitation process. Teams think differently here because they are genuinely somewhere different.

Every programme is designed together with you. We start with a conversation about what your team needs — a decision to reach, a culture to build, a strategy to stress-test — and build the programme backwards from that outcome.

Fifteen years managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects in London before moving to Italy to build Girotondo Horizons from the ground up. Julia designs and facilitates every retreat personally — she does not send a substitute.

"The most useful thing I learned from fifteen years of major infrastructure projects is that the quality of the conversation in the room determines the quality of everything that gets built outside it."

A typical 3-day programme

What a retreat here
actually looks like

Day 1 · Arrive & settle
Arrival, landscape walk and opening session
Guests arrive from midday. Lunch on the terrace. An afternoon walk in the National Park — not a team-building exercise, just a walk — to let the altitude and the landscape do its work before the facilitation begins. Evening opening session: where are we, what are we here for, what do we want to leave with. Dinner together.
Day 2 · Work deeply
Full facilitation day with FabLab session
Morning: the core facilitation session. Structured around your specific challenge using Lean Six Sigma methodology — defining the problem, mapping the system, identifying the leverage points. Afternoon: FabLab session. The team makes something together. Physical making unlocks different kinds of thinking. Evening: thermal spa or astronomical observatory.
Day 3 · Decide and leave
Decisions, commitments and departure
Morning: converting insight into decision. We use a structured commitment process — not a to-do list, but a set of clear accountabilities that the team leaves with. Lunch together. Departure from 1pm. Julia provides a written summary of decisions, commitments and next steps within 48 hours.
Throughout
The things that cannot be scheduled
The conversations at dinner. The view from the terrace at dawn. The moment someone makes something in the FabLab and says "I haven't done anything with my hands since school." The realisation, usually on day two, that the problem you came to solve is not actually the problem. These are the things that justify leaving the office.

Frequently asked

Questions from
HR managers and team leaders

How many people can you accommodate?
We work best with groups of 6 to 20 people. For larger groups we can discuss a multi-cohort approach.
What is the accommodation like?
Comfortable, clean and warm. The rooms are practical mountain hostel rooms — not boutique hotel rooms — but the communal spaces, food and landscape more than compensate. We are slowly redesigning the interior under Antonio's direction.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
Yes. We cook all meals on site using local and seasonal ingredients. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other requirements are all catered for — just let us know when you enquire.
How do we get there?
Train to Reggio Emilia (1h from Milan, 40 min from Bologna), then local bus or private transfer to Ventasso — approximately 1h 15 min. By car: 2h 30 min from Milan, 1h 30 min from Bologna. See our contact page for full directions.
Is the FabLab session included in all programmes?
Yes — the FabLab is included in every programme. Sessions are facilitated and designed around your group. No prior making or technical experience is needed.
What language are sessions delivered in?
English is our primary facilitation language. We can also deliver sessions in Italian, and work in both languages for mixed international groups.
Can we expense this through Fondimpresa or similar training funds?
Programmes with a professional development component — particularly those involving Lean Six Sigma methodology, innovation facilitation or leadership development — may be eligible for Fondimpresa reimbursement. Ask us and we can provide appropriate documentation.
Do you work with international companies?
Yes — approximately half of our enquiries come from companies outside Italy, particularly from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. The Appennino Reggiano is accessible from most European cities within 3 hours, and all facilitation is available in English.
